Vermont PoCket Guide & Content Tool
Personalized quiz for VT residents
We collaborated with game design and development collective GameTheory to build a web app for The Vermont Professionals of Color Network (VT PoC), one of whose many goals is to economically empower BIPOC organizations, businesses and entrepreneurs in the state of Vermont.
Our goal was to build a web app for new residents to discover their own PoCket of Vermont through a personalized quiz, recommendations, and directory of businesses. Additionally, we built a custom tool for VT PoC to update content on the site dynamically when needed.

Process
Understanding client needs
The organization's goals called for a website more dynamic than a simple directory, including a custom quiz with personalized results. We collaborated closely to tie quiz questions to specific regions and interests, so that each user would generate their own one-of-a-kind persona with local recommendations.
Building a sustainable content management system (CMS)
The web app was initially populated with content from a static file containing Vermont regions, interests, and businesses. Eventually, we and the client decided that a system for managing content in the site would be needed, but neither existing CMS platforms nor standard backend databases would be suitable for how the web app was built. Instead, we built a lightweight, custom tool that enables the client to update data in a pseudo-database that is reflected on the web app instantly.
Technical nitty gritty
The web app and content tool are both built using React, React Redux, and React Router. The app is served content from a hosted JSON file, which is updated in the content tool using JSON Server. Developers leveraged Vite and Netlify for development, deployment, and hosting.

Outcome
We delivered a custom dynamic web app for the client to share with their network, in turn welcoming new residents to the state and economically empowering BIPOC organizations and businesses.
Additionally, the team at VT PoC are able to manage content on the site, including adding new interests and businesses, entirely on their own without needing us to update and redeploy the site manually.
New residents to the state of Vermont will be able to find their own VT PoCket as local recommendations evolve and grow.
