SOMA Pilipinas
Bike racks design & rendering
We were commissioned by SOMA Pilipinas, the Filipino Cultural Heritage District Organization in San Francisco, to design a set of bike racks to add to their portfolio of future public works projects in the neighborhood.
Our goal was to deliver material specs, vector designs, and renderings of a concept that would reflect the people, vision, experiences, and history of the neighborhood.

Process
Form follows function
Before finalizing a design, we considered the potential site plan and budget, as well as the SF Department of Public Works Better Streets Design Guidelines, to inform the number of bike racks and material specs appropriate for the project.
Symbols on the street
Inspired by the entrepreneurship and dedication of the Filipinos and Filpino-Americans who feed the community (whether through street food stalls in Manila or brick-and-mortar small businesses in San Francisco), we designed a set of modern bike racks that would bring vibrancy to the neighborhood streets. Each design is based on a specific Filipino street food snack and features a laser-engraved label with its colloquial name.
Technical nitty gritty
We used SketchUp and Blender to create the 3D models and renderings of the individual bike racks. For further visualization, we created scenes in Unity to render the bike racks in a virtual environment with bicycle models and inside a 3D map of San Francisco's SOMA neighborhood.

Outcome
We delivered a set of designs that reflected our strong concept: street food bike racks that would contribute more than just functional, essential parking — they would serve as iconic cultural signifiers of their caretakers and surroundings.
Our concept and specs were added to the SOMA Pilipinas’ public realm portfolio, to be presented to the public, funders, stakeholders, as well as to city officials and developers for potential implementation in the future. Furthermore, our site-specific renderings assisted in visualizing the future bike racks in an immersive, natural way.
